Ghanaian Youth Are Not Lazy: Empowering Youth by Overcoming Barriers and Addressing Resource Limitations

2025-02-13  James Nartey

The Misconception of Laziness

There is a prevalent notion that today’s youth are lazy, unfocused, and lack ambition. This assertion is not entirely accurate. Dr. Daniel McKorley

The Eagerness of Ghanaian Youths

Many Ghanaian youths are eager, ready, and willing to work. However, due to limited job opportunities and a struggling economy, they are compelled to take on side jobs. Throughout their lives, they encounter numerous barriers: restricted job prospects, a challenging economy, and a system that fails to hear their voices. Labeling them as lazy is dismissive and dishonest.

Lack of Skills and Education

The lack of skills among the youth is not due to laziness but rather the absence of opportunities to learn these skills. Education is not accessible to all, not because of a lack of effort, but due to limited access and opportunities. Encouraging young people to "start a small business" is futile when even small opportunities are out of reach. Many have faced rejection and neglect when seeking assistance. Without providing an enabling environment, it is unjust to label them as lazy.

Providing Practical Support

It is imperative not only to encourage young people to prepare for their future but also to equip them with practical skills, valuable tools, start-up capital, and job opportunities. This support will enable them to begin their journey and achieve their full potential. Dr. Daniel McKorley
